The New CMC 500:
We Listened. We Got the Message.
And We've Revolutionized Protection Testing.
Great news – the CMC 500 is here! Join us in celebrating the start of a new era in protection testing. Our aim was nothing less than to make the extremely successful CMC 356 even better – while setting another new standard for the industry. We were looking for a future-proof solution to tackle challenges in the field of protection technology that arise due to an aging infrastructure, the expansion of power grids, and an increasingly acute skills shortage. And we're proud to say that we found one.
As we worked toward this goal, we listened very closely to what people had to say. We spoke with our customers in depth about their protection testing needs, both current and future. And we sincerely thank them for speaking so openly with us!
The bar was set high – the perfect protection test set needed to be compact and lightweight. And it had to deliver on these criteria without sacrificing any output power. Ideally, the test set would be suitable for testing both protection relays and other equipment in the protection chain as efficiently as possible. Workplace safety and cybersecurity also came up again and again in our conversations. What’s more, our customers are increasingly operating conventional as well as digital substations, with both types needing to be tested. Protection test sets that are built for the future need to be capable of handling these requirements too.
Meeting all of these technical and functional requirements was an almost impossible task – but our development team made it happen. We wanted to take as much of the workload as possible off the shoulders of utilities, service providers, and industrial companies, and we invested the time required to do this.

Fully Validate Your Protection System
With Maximum Testing Efficiency
Whether fully automated or manual, the CMC 500 paves the way for testing with greater efficiency and reproducibility than ever before, and in the minimum time. The system keeps pace with current demands by offering a combination of parameter-based and system-based testing for full validation of your protection system in its entirety. Plus, the unparalleled usability of the software makes troubleshooting during commissioning or after faults incredibly easy.
Thanks to our extensive library of test templates, you won't be starting from square one when preparing for testing. Once you have defined a test plan, you can run it as often as you want. Because the test procedures are automated and standardized, you'll also be enhancing the quality of your testing. And test results are automatically documented in their entirety – leaving no room for errors that can occur when compiling results after the fact. What's more, you can of course continue using your existing test plans in Test Universe and RelaySimTest in conjunction with the CMC 500.

Validating Cutting-Edge Protection
Technologies in IEC 61850 Environments
The CMC 500 expertly balances the requirements of existing substations with electromechanical relays and the latest technologies such as IEC 61850.
You'll also be ideally equipped for testing future relay generations and their communication protocols, as you can integrate software modules for tests with GOOSE, R-GOOSE, MMS, or Sampled Values in your test routines as you would any other test module – and reap the full advantages of automated testing for IEC 61850 as well. The CMC 500 also supports Sampled Values with configurable datasets in accordance with IEC 61869.
The protection relay test set is designed to support you a whole life long, featuring slots for modules that allow the system to keep pace with your changing testing requirements. Plus, you can easily adapt existing test plans for digital substations whenever needed.

Designed for Cybersecurity
From the Very Start
Our customers are grappling with sharply increasing requirements in their efforts to ward off cyber threats. We've responded by integrating the know-how from our cybersecurity products in the CMC 500 right from its inception. Cyberattacks on your substation are impeded based on a wide range of security measures that we have integrated in the development of the device from the very start. But it takes more than security precautions on the hardware and software side to ensure comprehensive protection against cyber threats. With this in mind, we also took cybersecurity into account when allocating responsibilities and setting up internal workflows and approval processes, in addition to implementing measures such as Secure Boot, encrypted communication, and tamper-proof firmware.

"A tall iron gate besides a small hedge is useless. It's always the weakest link in the chain that defines the level of cybersecurity."

Rely on Maximum Workplace
Safety During Testing
Protection testers working in substations are exposed to an increased risk of electrical hazards. We are very aware of these risks, so we thought carefully about how the CMC 500 could help testers create safe test setups as per EN 50191, for example. We developed the test set in line with internationally established standards in the field of functional security (ISO 13849-1). A multi-stage safety concept minimizes electrical hazards to the greatest possible extent. This includes an INTERLOCK key, an operating mode button and – coming soon – an external emergency switching off button with clearly visible signal lamps. Thanks to the operating mode button, the CMC 500 allows for risk-free rewiring during testing while the device is switched on. All connectors are located on the front side of the device to reduce trip hazards. Safety and wiring instructions in test procedures also draw the user's attention to dangers during testing, while standardized test procedures stave off time pressures and careless mistakes.

Truly Versatile: Experience
the Advantages
The CMC 500 offers an incredibly wide range of applications and is suitable for testing all generations of protection relays – from high-burden electromechanical protection through fully digital IEC 61850 IEDs. It also creates scope for functional testing on other crucial equipment in the protection chain, such as current transformers and circuit breakers. Available in five different variants, the device is perfectly equipped for your individual requirements. Up to 7 voltages or 10 currents are available, depending on the variant. Thanks to current amplitudes of up to 450 A, the entire signal path can be verified during commissioning using primary injection.
Paired with the EnerLyzer software, the CMC 500 helps you troubleshoot any issues quickly during initial commissioning and recommissioning. With this powerful duo at the ready, you can carry out comprehensive real-time measurements and signal recording of Sampled Values, GOOSE, and conventional signals – with up to 10 channels and a sampling rate of up to 40 kHz. Analyses of transformer inrush currents, circuit breaker switching operations, synchronization events, generator and motor startup procedures, as well as power quality are effortless and deliver highly accurate results. And you can also use the CMC CT-Check add-on - available soon - as a simple and reliable way of testing your current transformers, including for knee point voltages and automatic demagnetization!

Make Field Work Simple
with a Reliable Solution
We designed and built the CMC 500 from scratch, including new current and voltage generators as well as a sophisticated thermal concept. We geared the design of the lightweight, robust device toward use in the field, in line with internationally recognized standards. The CMC 500 is around 15% smaller and up to 25% lighter than the CMC 356 – but its current amplitudes are still up to four times as high. Every single device undergoes a multi-day endurance test prior to delivery, so you can count on yours to operate reliably every time.
