How to Test Voltage Transformers Like a Pro

Save time with an automated workflow and a new method for determining CVT capacitances.

Voltage transformers are an essential part of the electrical energy system. Regular tests of inductive voltage transformers (VTs) and capacitive voltage transformers (CVTs) ensure reliable operation for both protection and metering purposes.

In this episode, OMICRON instrument transformer testing experts Thomas Bischof and Felix Feustel talk about new testing features for voltage transformers, which were recently added to our VOTANO 100.

They describe how automated workflows and a new method for determining CVT capacitances with the same testing device help to make voltage transformer testing safer and faster than before.

The benefit of the new method is that the determination of the capacitance of C1 and C2 works independently from the CVT design.”

Thomas Bischof, Application Engineer, OMICRON

“With the new testing method, it takes less than a minute to determine both capacitance values. And the sweeps are low voltage, which is potentially safer.

Felix Feustel, Product Manager, OMICRON
